Causes and Background

The battle arises from the aggressive expansionism of Cleon the Great, the self-styled Butcher King of Astapor. After Daenerys Targaryen overthrew the slave system in Astapor, Cleon seized power and restored slavery, reversing her reforms. He then launched a war against Yunkai, the neighboring slave city, despite Daenerys's explicit warnings against such folly. "King Cleon would be wise to tend his own gardens and let the Yunkai'i tend theirs," Daenerys tells an Astapori envoy, adding, "Let King Cleon feed his people before he leads them out to battle." Cleon ignores this counsel, and his aggression provokes a powerful coalition against him. The Yunkai'i, who had been hiring sellswords and making alliances since Daenerys spared their city, assemble a formidable host. They are joined by two legions from New Ghis, the free companies the Long Lances, the Windblown, and the Company of the Cat, and later secure the Golden Company as well. The battle is joined at the Horns of Hazzat, a location whose name becomes synonymous with Astapor's doom.

What Happens

The engagement is a catastrophic rout for Astapor. Cleon the Great leads his new Unsullied—slave soldiers trained in the same brutal manner as Daenerys's own—into battle, but they prove no match for the combined Yunkish forces and their sellsword allies. The Windblown and the Company of the Cat, mounted and experienced, thunder down on the Astapori flanks, while a legion from New Ghis meets the Unsullied head-on. The fighting is savage, but the outcome is never in doubt. The decisive moment comes when Caggo Corpsekiller, a captain of the Windblown, fights through the king's protectors on his monstrous warhorse and cuts Cleon down with one blow of his curved Valyrian arakh. The blow rips through Cleon's copper armor, and from within comes "an awful stench and a hundred wriggling grave worms." Cleon had been dead all along; the desperate Astapori had pulled his corpse from his tomb, clad it in armor, and tied it onto a horse to inspire their troops. When the ruse is exposed, the new Unsullied throw down their spears and flee, only to find the gates of Astapor shut against them. The slaughter that follows is merciless, with the Windblown riding down the terrified eunuchs.

Consequences and Aftermath

The battle's consequences are immediate and catastrophic. With Cleon's army destroyed and the city sealed against its own defenders, Astapor falls to the Yunkai'i and their allies. The city is sacked and burned; the Temple of the Graces is set ablaze with the sick inside, and fires consume every corner of the city. The survivors flee into the countryside, many carrying the bloody flux, the disease known as the pale mare. This plague spreads through the refugee columns and into the Yunkish siege camps, devastating both sides. The fall of Astapor removes the last buffer between Yunkai and Meereen, leaving Daenerys's city directly threatened. The Yunkai'i, emboldened by their victory, turn their full attention northward, marching on Meereen with their sellswords and allies. The battle thus serves as the catalyst for the final phase of the siege of Meereen, transforming a contained war into a direct existential threat to Daenerys's rule. It also demonstrates the fragility of her abolitionist project: Astapor, the first city she freed, reverts to slavery and is destroyed, a grim portent for Meereen's future.
